Proverbs 13

13:20 "He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." If you guys remember back to Proverbs 1 this may look familiar. God is talking about the people that we are friends with and the people we hang out with. God challenges us to search after wisdom in many ways and along with that He provides examples. Surrounding ourselves with wise people is one of those applications we can make. What are some practical ways of surrounding ourselves with wise people? And how can we improve ourselves through walking with the wise?

Wow there were a lot of verses that really stuck out to me for many reasons that I'm not going into detail about. Verses 7, 11, 14, and 20.
I think wise people are the ones who honestly desire to have direction in their life and are open to correction and advice. They want to change their life for the better. Most of my friends have changed quite a bit from when I first met them. From my point of view, a view in which it seems that I'm on the outside of the circle and they are the ones on the inside, I can see the problems they suffer through in life. Friends that said they would never drink or have sex or do any of that stuff are now doing it like ITS NORMAL. They cant see it because the world around them encourages it, they are blind and lost to the sin that is taking over. But I cant figure out why I am the one that can see it even though I have the same chance as they do to fall into sin. I've realized its because I have surrounded myself with wise people. From the moment I realized I was lost and turned to God, I started my search for wisdom and found it in those I have surrounded myself with. The biggest and best way to improve ourselves and become wise is to STOP(hit pause) AND LISTEN. That's it. You make a wise decision when you realize you need direction in life and start searching for wisdom, and you surround yourself with wise people in your search. And who knows, maybe God will put wise people in your life without you even realizing it. He did to me, and now that person is gone and I find myself wishing I could hit REWIND. BUT THERE IS NO REWIND BUTTON GRR!

I think the people who want advice or correction are the ones who are wise. They are the ones who don't care what others think of them. and they are the ones who ask what they did wrong and apologize instead of arguing and defending themselves to get out of the trouble. If we hung out with those kind of people then we would learn from them. we would try to be more like them which is in my opinion more like God if you're wise.

Norris i definitly agree with what you said. It is hard to look at your friends around you at school and understand why they think things like sex and drinking are normal. The world veiws are everywhere around us and they really do try to make you think "everybody is doing it." Sometimes i even get drug into it all. I guess this is why God says to surround youself with wise people. When i look at the wise people in my life i realize that not everybody is following the ways of the world, it is my reality check. I love the message version of verse 20-
"Become wise by walking with the wise;
hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces."
